Field Note No. 11 Independence

July 04, 20262 min read

Today we celebrate a nation's independence.

Tomorrow, many of us will quietly return to the places where we still do not feel free.

We will go back to conversations where we silence ourselves.
Relationships where we shrink.
Jobs where we abandon our values.
Dreams we have postponed because the timing does not feel right.
Versions of ourselves we have kept hidden because belonging felt safer than becoming.

That made me wonder.

How often do we celebrate freedom while unconsciously surrendering it?

Not because someone took it from us.

Because somewhere along the way we learned that acceptance was safer than authenticity.
That approval was more valuable than peace.
That fitting in mattered more than telling the truth.

What Freedom Actually Looks Like

The older I get the more I realize freedom is not always dramatic.

Sometimes freedom sounds like saying no.

Sometimes it sounds like asking for help.

Sometimes it looks like walking away from what no longer honors who you are becoming.

Sometimes it looks like staying, but showing up differently.

Freedom is allowing your nervous system to exhale because you are no longer carrying a version of yourself that was built for survival instead of truth.

It is waking up and realizing you do not have to earn your worth today.

It is forgiving yourself for who you had to be.

It is releasing the exhausting work of performing and returning to the quiet confidence of simply being.

The Quieter Battles

I have had to claim my own freedom in ways that did not come with fireworks.

In rooms where I chose honesty over image when the easier thing would have been silence.

In moments where I stopped apologizing for taking up space even when every old instinct told me to make myself smaller.

In the slow, unglamorous work of learning that my voice did not need permission to exist.

History remembers the battles that secured our independence.

Our lives are shaped by the quieter battles no one else sees.

The moment you choose honesty over image.
The moment you stop apologizing for taking up space.
The moment you trust your own voice.
The moment you stop waiting for permission to live the life you have been entrusted with.

Closing

Maybe freedom is not a destination.

Maybe it is a daily practice.

A choice made in a hundred small moments that no one applauds.

So while the fireworks light up the sky tonight I hope we do not only celebrate the freedom we have inherited.

I hope we honor the freedom we are still creating.

One truth.
One boundary.
One act of courage.
One deep breath at a time.

Where in your life are you free.

And where are you still waiting for permission.

Invisible Crown leadership begins within.
Authority is not declared. It is embodied.
